The Phoenix Mastering Plus

NOK 59,800.00

€5250 ex VAT outside Norway, including shipping

——————————————————

The mastering version of the classic Phoenix design. Front panel controls utilising high quality hand wired Elma switches. Increased stability at faster timing constants. Larger power supply section for increased stability under load.

  • All valve signal path and side chain, point to point hand wired in England.

  • Subtle control with 'soft knee' compression more compression effects when pushed hard.

  • Stereo link for mix buss compression.

  • Side chain filters to enable compression of all frequencies except bass.

  • Flat frequency response over full audio range and beyond.

  • Very low phase shift and harmonic distortion (unless pushed hard).

  • Push-pull design gives a natural warm sound with high output level.

  • Output trim controls for fine adjustment or lower level operation.

  • Balanced ins and outs with custom made Sowter transformers.

  • Bypass switch on each channel removes all electronics.

  • Standby switch to prolong valve life.

  • Distortion effects can be created with standby on.

NEW SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Elma switches for gain and threshold controls.

  • Alpha switches for attack and release controls.

  • All Mullard and Siemens NOS valves.

  • Easy recall- ability.

  • Zero adjustment on front.

  • Precise calibration.

  • More gain than earlier Master Phoenix.

Further info:

The Phoenix is now considered to be a classic valve variant-mu style compressor.

In keeping with Vic Keary’s philosophy the Phoenix can operate with very low distortion and a very wide frequency response. Meaning that the valves within the circuit are running at their absolute optimum performance.

The Mastering Phoenix takes this concept even further with its larger power supply. This ensures stability under all conditions which may well be of benefit whilst using fro mastering applications.

This allows the Phoenix to be used without any fear of causing negative artefacts. However, as always with Thermionic Culture’s designs, this also means that the Phoenix will continue to give euphoric and musically pleasing results when pushed way beyond its normal operating conditions.

Valve harmonic saturation will begin to occur and the knee of the var-mu type compression will also alter and become steeper when the Phoenix is driven harder with level. This can provide a different feel to the compression and sonic results given to the music.

It’s not possible to break the Phoenix with too much level, so the user can comfortably enjoy experimenting with these possibilities.

It should also be noted that the Phoenix will not only pass audio in Standby mode but the resulting, still relatively subtle, saturation provided can sound very pleasing indeed!

Although the frequency response of the Phoenix is extremely flat from well below 20Hz and well above 20kHz, with low distortion and noise, it can impart a beautiful sonic flavour to sound.

There can tend to be a gentle lifting of the lowest frequencies when under compression and this alongside the extremely well preserved high end and additional valve harmonics benefits the sense of size that the Phoenix imparts.

Alongside the sonic attributes of the Mastering Phoenix the high quality switch based controls of this model help enormously with rapid and reliable stereo setup and recall.
